Mercer Tennis Classic: Danielle Lao Upsets No. 1 Seed Brengle

MERCER UNIVERSITY – LEROY PEDDY TENNIS CENTER – OCT 21 – OCT 28, 2018
USTA Pro Circuit 80K Event to be on Tennis Channel

MACON, Georgia, (October 23, 2018) The main draws in singles and doubles began on Tuesday at Mercer University for the 2018 edition of the Mercer Tennis Classic, a USTA Pro Circuit women’s 80K event running through Sunday October 28.

Singles and doubles first rounds featured matchups of Americans with some other intriguing contests taking place on four show courts.

Tournament top-seed, Madison Brengle’s stay in the singles draw didn’t last for long as she was upset by WTA No. 193 and former USC All-American, Danielle Lao 6-3,6-3.

The 84-minute match showcased Lao’s slice tactics and ability to draw Bengle into the net to unleash a barrage of passing shots. Lao’s play frustrated Brengle late into the second set as Brengle lost her concentration when serving to stay in the match. Lao will play next on Thursday.

Lauren Davis, who reached a ranking peak of No. 25 in 2017 won her opening round match over fellow American Gail Brodsky. Davis won the tight match, 6-4, 6-3 with her experience and consistency. Davis and others in this event are looking to work their way back into the top-100 as the year comes to a close

Singles seeds in action on Wednesday include: Jessica Pegula, Claire Liu, Nicole Gibbs and Christina McHale.

The top-seed in doubles is the team of Alexa Guarachi and Giuliana Olmos. They won their first round match on Tuesday afternoon.

In addition to the qualifying draw, there is a 32 person singles main draw and a 16 team doubles draw featuring players ranked in the top-100 in the world.
